My First Blog Post

Hello world! My name is Matt, and I am the founder of Levvil. I am originally from Cape Town and completed my undergraduate at the University of Cape Town (UCT), obtaining my Business Science degree with honors in finance and accounting. The skills that I obtained from this degree have given me a well-rounded business acumen and taught me the necessary skills for work in the business world. In particular, my strengths lay in finance and accounting, as well as statistics and mathematics. I soon realised that my skill set was lacking in the modern business world and this led me to pursue an MSc in Business Analytics at Esade. It has been a great experience to learn entirely new concepts, which can be combined with my business skills to lead to a unique way of problem-solving.

I have always shown a great interest in technology and start-ups. I have done an internship at a tech firm in America as well as worked on my own startup in Cape Town. This start-up operated in the tech sphere, in which I developed a GPS tracking device for informal settlements. The goal of this was to generate a free and community-based security system that lower-income individuals could place on their household valuables. If the valuable was moved when they were not home, this would trigger an alarm that sent them and their neighbors a message. Unfortunately, due to funding issues, this is currently inactive, but the prototype is ready to be deployed again at a future date.

But enough about the boring stuff, why did I start Levvil? It all began when Coronavirus disrupted all our lives (I apologize for mentioning that word, but it wouldn't be a blog in 2020 without mentioning it). I have always been an avid fan of sports, tech, politics, and finance. This meant that during lockdown I spent a large portion of my day engaging with these topics on different social media platforms and sharing my knowledge on various social media platforms. I quickly came to realize, that no matter the quality of my posts or comments, I struggled to be heard and was quickly drowned out by other accounts (and even bots). This drove me crazy, as I knew that what I was saying would be beneficial to others. Furthermore, I often found myself reading fake news and information that was placed at the top of my feed simply because whoever posted it had a large number of followers. Unfortunately, we often only realise this at the end of the post or not at all! I felt hard done by and thought that information should be seen based on more than followers and likes. This led me to think of Levvil, a platform that values posts based on its validation by people that are actually knowledgable in the topic at hand.
